Now that some of the young promotores and promotoras
who have worked for several years with CESESMA are reaching the age of
19 or 20, they are entering a new stage in their lives. They have to
find a way of making a living, and at the same time they want to
continue contributing to the development of their communities. This is
the reasoning behind CESESMA's new pilot programme based on an approach
we call "associativity".
With this programme, CESESMA provides technical and
material support so that these young promotores/as can set up
micro-businesses in their communities.
We currently have 24 associativity projects up and running:
6 bee-keeping projects
4 chaya farms (a popular Nicaraguan vegetable)
3 dress-making projects
11 poultry farms
The first projects are already bearing fruit,
with the young associates selling chayas, eggs and poultry in local
markets. The bee-keepers are producing honey and will soon be ready
to take it to market. Next year
(2007) we will be able to evaluate the viability and success of this
pilot, with the goal of incorporating more young people into the
programme.
